About Us
We are Green for Change Ghana (GCG)
Green for Change Ghana (GCG) is an environmental non-governmental organization committed to working with communities and initiating programs that benefit both communities and the environment. We discover and promote effective environmental practices and policies for the benefit of local communities and the planet. These include providing practical conservation interventions aimed at contributing to the sustainable management of important ecological habitats and strengthening the capacity of communities to be resilient and adapt to current trends in climate change and other environmental threats.
Legal Status
Green for Change Ghana (GCG) began operations in 2014 and was officially registered with the Registrar General Department in 2019, holding registration number CG123652019 and tax identification number C0030464005. OUR KEY FOCUS AREAS
At Green for Change Ghana (GCG), we tackle crucial environmental and social issues through
programs designed to foster sustainability, resilience, and ecosystem vitality. Our main focus areas include:
Habitat and Landscape Restoration
We are committed to restoring degraded ecosystems and promoting biodiversity by sustainably managing natural landscapes. Our projects rehabilitate forests, wetlands, and other essential ecosystems to preserve habitats and support long-term resilience.
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
GCG empowers communities to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate impacts. We promote renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and disaster preparedness to lower vulnerabilities and enhance resilience in both rural and urban areas.
Environmental Conservation Education
Central to our mission is education. Through outreach, workshops, and school-based programs, we cultivate environmental stewardship, raising awareness and mobilizing action to protect resources and combat climate change.
Research and Advocacy
We conduct research to uncover insights into environmental issues and advocate for sustainable practices and policy reforms. Our research informs evidence-based advocacy, influencing policymakers at local, national, and regional levels for transformative change.
Collaborative Natural Resource Governance
Sustainable resource management requires collaboration. Using the Community Resource Management (CREMA) approach, we promote partnerships among government, communities, and stakeholders to ensure equitable access and responsible resource use.
Conservation Agriculture
GCG supports farmers in adopting practices like no-till farming and crop rotation to conserve soil health, protect water resources, and enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact.
Natural Resources Conflict Management
Recognizing the challenges in resource competition, GCG facilitates dialogue and conflict resolution to encourage peaceful coexistence and fair resource access, helping to build sustainable communities.
Renewable Energy Initiatives
We champion renewable energy solutions, such as solar power and clean cookstoves, to decrease reliance on traditional fuels. Our initiatives improve energy access and contribute to climate change mitigation, especially in rural areas.
Green Value Chain Development
GCG fosters green economic opportunities by developing sustainable value chains in honey, cashew, shea, and non-timber forest products, supporting job creation and ecosystem conservation.
Behavior Change for Sustainability
True transformation requires shifts in attitudes and actions. GCG employs behavior-change strategies to inspire tree planting, eco-friendly habits, and a collective commitment to environmental stewardship.
News & Events
Green For Change Ghana Participation in the 2023 Green Ghana Campaign
As part of Green for Change Ghana’s mandate to conserve biodiversity in Ghana, especially in the savannah ecological landscape, we partook in the 2023 Green Ghana Campaign in collaboration with the Forest Service Division (FSD) across three (3) communities within the West Gonja Municipality in the Savannah Region of Ghana. About 1,500 cashew seedlings were distributed to 152 beneficiaries made-up of 86 males, and 66 females with each receiving 10 seedlings and were planted in schools, farms under an agroforestry system, and community-degraded areas. Before the distribution, the Green for Change Ghana team had practical training sessions for beneficiaries on the best practices in tree planting.
The Green Ghana campaign is an initiative by the government for Ghanaians to plant at least five million trees across the country to replace depleting plant stock. Thanks to FSD for the seedling support
Training of Trainers on
Cashew Nut Quality
As part of Green for Change Ghana's (GCG) strategy to deepen relationships with grassroots structures such as the West Gonja municipal Department of Agriculture, and also ensure that the extension officers continue to monitor and provide technical backstopping to the farmers when the project ends, a training of trainers program was organized at the GCG office in Damongo on 2nd June 2023 for Agriculture Extension Agents (AEAs) and GCG field officers on nut quality under the “Building the capacity of smallholder cashew farmers on harvest and post-harvest including nut quality” project. The training which was led by a senior agronomist of the department covered how to determine the four (4) key nut quality parameters such as nut count, defective rate, moisture content, and kernel out-turn ratio (KOR).
The trained officers will be supported with resources and test kits to conduct step-down training for a minimum of 300 smallholder cashew farmers in 6 communities within the West Gonja Municipality.
Training Of 300 Cashew Farmers on Harvest & Post Harvest Management
Green for Change Ghana working in collaboration with the West Gonja Municipal Department of Agriculture conducted training on harvest and post-harvest management techniques for 300 smallholder cashew farmers under the six (6) months "Building the capacity of smallholder cashew farmers on harvest and post-harvest including nut quality” project. The training was conducted from 11th to 19th May 2023 across the 6 project implementation communities in the West Gonja municipality. Some of the topics covered during the training included pre-harvest plantation clearing, fire tracing or firebreak around the plantation, fruit collection, separation/detaching of nuts from apples using twine, drying and sorting of nuts, and cooling after drying to avoid rewetting and storage.
The project is implemented under the Feed the Future Ghana Trade and Investment (GTI) Activity funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
