John Balankoo Sumbo is a dynamic and results-driven leader with over ten years of diverse experience in research, project implementation, and leadership within sectors including agriculture, natural resource management, climate change, and conflict resolution. His expertise lies in successfully managing and delivering projects that drive sustainable development across Ghana, ensuring that they align with local needs, national priorities, and international standards.
With a strong foundation in conservation, landscape restoration, and climate-smart agriculture, John has proven success in mobilizing communities, fostering partnerships, and securing funding. As Executive Director of Green for Change Ghana since October 2019, he has led the organization through strategic growth, providing guidance in the design and implementation of innovative projects focused on environmental conservation, natural resource conflict management, and climate resilience.
John’s career is marked by impactful roles in several organizations. As Ghana Program Officer for the USDA West Africa PRO-Cashew Project under CNFA, he coordinated training for over 5,000 cashew farmers, distributed 200,000 grafted cashew seedlings, established demonstration farms, and led initiatives in agroforestry and orchard management. At the Center for Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies (CECOTAPS), he implemented USAID-funded programs that promoted peaceful coexistence between farmers and Fulani pastoralists, provided mediation training, and raised awareness of radicalization and violent extremism.
His contributions to sustainable development have also included roles with the Cooperative Development Foundation of Canada and Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), where he addressed food security, community-based conservation, and women’s economic empowerment. At Tree Aid Ghana and Winrock International, he advanced environmental conservation and climate resilience through innovative and context-specific initiatives.
John holds a Bachelor of Science in Renewable Natural Resources Management and a Master of Philosophy in Environmental Management and Sustainability. His dedication to professional growth is evident in his advanced training in project management, data analysis, financial management, and team leadership.
With his broad experience in managing multi-sectoral projects, John continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Green for Change Ghana’s future, ensuring that the organization remains a leading force for sustainable development in Ghana and beyond.
